The Conception’s long weekend, a city break in the European capital cities

A city break in a European capital city is what we suggest to propose to your clients that will make the most of the Catholic religious celebration of the Immaculate Conception to carve out three days far from the daily routine and travel. It’s a festivity that, in the Catholic countries, is celebrated the 8th December each year, and in this year, in 2017, the 8th December is on Friday.

Seven are the capital cities in Europe on which we suggest you to focus for the Conception’s long weekend, precisely the weekend that goes from Friday 8th December to Sunday 10th December: Tallin (Estonia), London (United Kingdom), Prague (Czech Republic), Paris (France), Vienna (Austria), Madrid (Spain) and Rome (Italy).

Tallinn has a leading role in the chart Best in Travel 2018 realized by the Lonely Planet experts, in which it appears to be the cheapest travel destination «[…] a compact and trendy capital city, that pledges an excellent price-quality relationship».

Before providing some sources, that we think could be useful to learn more about the city, we remind you that, in 2018, will take place the hundredth anniversary of the Estonian Declaration of Independence.

The events in program to celebrate the anniversary has started since the last April and will last until the 2nd February 2020, a date that represents another historic event for Estonia: the 100 years of the Tartu Piece Treaty, signed with the Soviet Russia. Information and event calendar on EV100.

City break in London, United Kingdom

We have recently dedicated a focus to London. We limit ourselves to suggest you to google the events calendar that wil take place in the capital city of England and United Kingdom, where you can find all the principal appointments of December.


We also report to you that the Winter Wonderland Hyde Park has already opened its doors, «a Christmas amusement park with skating rinks, a ferris wheel, stands full of toys and sweets and, obviously, Father Christmas’ cavern». An ideal place to who travels with the family and children.

City break in Prague, Czech Republic

On the next 2nd December the Christmas markets in Prague will open their doors in the Old Town Square; they’re «the biggest in the Czech Republic and some of the best in Europe», as the Czech Tourism Authority writes. Other markets can be visited in Wenceslas Square, Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky), Tylovo náměstí Square (Tylovo náměstí) and Peace Square (Náměstí Míru).

City break in Paris, France

«Paris has always been the Ville Lumière by definition. This is an expression that recalls the thousand lights of the city, of course, but also an evocative connection to the spirit of a city that’s a lighthouse for France and not only», as Atout France, the Authority for the Development of French Tourism, describes.


Since half November, the capital city of France starts to wear «its most beautiful light dresses» to welcome and celebrate at its best Christmas and New Year’s Eve, as the Authority of the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Paris points out.

Who will reach Paris during the Conception’s long weekend, will already find some Christmas markets open, such as the Marché de Noël des Abbesses, in Montmartre, and le Village de Noël sur le Parvis de La Défense, in the namesake neighborhood.

City break in Wien, Austria

The Christmas markets has opened since half November also in the most beautiful squares of the Austrian capital city, from Rathausplatz to Maria-Theresien-Platz, to Karlsplatz or to Stephansplatz, just to mention some of them. For all the gastronomy lovers, the obligatory step is the Advent pleasure market at the Opera:lebkuchen, with cheese, meat products, punch and local wines.

City break in Madrid, Spain

The authority for the touristic promotion of the capital city of Spain points put at least 30 reasons to visit Madrid. Between these, there is eating a squid fried rings sandwich in Plaza Mayor, «the common courtyard of the city, a square that is uniform and different at the same time, a convivial meeting place destined to all the inhabitants of Madrid and the visitors».

In 2017, Plaza Mayor will celebrate its 400 years. The celebrations started the 17th February with a video mapping of which we propose you an extract, because of its fascination.

Also Madrid is getting ready to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve and even here your clients could enjoy the Christmas lights and the markets.
