Destination Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg, with its more than 5 million and 400.000 inhabitants, is the second most densely populated city in Russia, after Moscow. “Moscow and Saint Petersburg, the two Capital Cities of Russia” is the title of a focus published on Russia Travel, the website edited by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Federal Agency on Tourism. Because Saint Petersburg has been the capital city of Russia, too.

Saint Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703, when Russia was at war with Sweden, was declared capital city in 1712, instead of Moscow. Moscow was declared capital again from 1728 to 1732, year in which Saint Petersburg returned capital city of Russia. Saint Petersburg kept its capital city status until 1918, when it lost it definitely in favour of Moscow.

For years back, in 1914, Saint Petersburg assumed the name Petrograd. In 1924, it changed its name again to Leningrad. The original toponym – Saint Petersburg – was restored in 1991 after a popular referendum.

However, Saint Petersburg is even now a capital city, a «cultural capital», as Visit Petersburg, the official Tourist Information Bureau of Saint Petersburg, writes: «It’s a real worldwide cultural treasure».

On last December, for the third consecutive year, the award World’s Leading Cultural City Destination to the World Travel Awards (WTA) was assigned to Saint Petersburg. Saint Petersburg stood out on London (United Kingdom), New York (USA), Beijing (China), Quito (Ecuador), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Rome (Italy), Sydney (Australia) and Venice (Italy).

Saint Petersburg is among the stars of the WTA also this year, with the following nominations:

  • Europe’s Leading City Break Destination 2019
  • Europe’s Leading City Destination 2019
  • Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination 2019
  • Europe’s Leading Heritage Destination 2019


Before saying goodbye, we want to remind you that on 2018 Saint Petersburg hosted seven matches of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, an event that brought more than a million tourists in the city. Still talking about numbers, in 2017, 7 million and 200.000 tourists visited Saint Petersburg, in response to the 6 million and 900.000 registered in 2016. At the end of 2018, according to the valuations, the number grew once again to 8 milion and 500.000 tourists.
