Natural wonders

«Nature can put on a thrilling show. The stage is vast, the lightning is dramatic, the extras are innumerable, and the budget for special effects is absolutely unlimited ». It’s difficult not to share what Yann Martel writes in the novel Life of Pi. However, it’s difficult to completely agree about the shows offered by nature, and whether they could be defined really amazing ones.

Any list, as far as based on well-defined parameters, could never satisfy everybody, since there will always be someone who will underline an unforgivable lack, a criticality in the methodology, something that may alter the validity of the rank itself. This is valid also, even more, actually, for the “Best of”, “Top Ten” and so on. This is valid also, for example, for the best cities of 2019 chart, to whom we dedicated a focus on these web pages.

We can find lists and charts in all times. Let’s just think, for example, about the seven wonders of the Ancient world, the works of architecture and sculpture that the Ancient people considered as the most beautiful man-made monuments: the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Why only seven? Because the number 7, had and has a strong symbolic value in many cultures. Moreover, it goes without saying that the ancient man-made monuments aren’t only seven. The tradition of the number 7 has inspired, in recent times, the New7Wonders Foundation with the list of the new seven wonders of the world in 2007 and, in 2011, with the seven wonders of nature one.

Both the lists come from an online poll, promoted at global level. Both of them prompted criticism, both for the reasons explained above and because the New7Wonders Foundation is the foundation of the New Open World Corporation, a Swiss profit-making company. Moreover, they prompted criticism also because several parts considered the voting modalities controversial.

It’s worthy of note also that the initiatives of the New7Wonders Foundation aren’t related with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Avoiding the opinions above, here are the seven natural wonders who came from the online poll:

  • Amazon rainforest, South America (note: the Amazon rainforest is situated for about the il 65% of its territory in Brazil, but it also covers part of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela)

  • Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
  • Jeju Island, South Korea
  • Iguazú Falls, South America (note: the falls are generated by the Iguazu River on the border of Argentine and Brazil, specifically the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná)

  • Komodo Island, Indonesia
  • Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, Philippines
  • Table Mountain, South Africa

The limits (and, we repeat, the criticalities) of this kind of initiatives and lists are clear to everybody. It’s up to you, strong thanks to your added value, to advise your clients passionate for nature at best. Moreover, Atlas Obscura, specifically the section Natural Wonders, could help you again.

We say goodbye and we wish you a good work with an Aristotle quote that fits like a glove.

«In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous»
